Fuzzy Blossoms

Fuzzy Blossoms

(Still testing themes) This particular bbf image was taken on a very dull day with slow-ish film, so I had the camera set on ‘bulb’ with no tripod, hence the fuzz-factor.

Camera: blackbird, fly with square (24 x 24) mask Film: Can’t remember!

  1. This picture is indicative of what I don’t get about the bbf. By reducing the size of (an already small) 35mm negative to a square format, isn’t the “fuzz factor” going to be an issue at almost any enlarged size, let’s say 8×10? People everywhere (in the lomo world) seem to be all hot and bothered by this camera, but it seems like there are many medium format TRLs that can be gotten used for less than the bbf (which can’t even be had!), plus you get the gloriousness of a 120 negative!

Hi Sonja, thanks for entering the debate! I think that a lot of people are excited by the camera because of it being a 35mm camera, rather than a medium format. Whether we like it or not, 35mm film is easier to obtain and get processed as well as being cheaper and giving you more exposures than MF. Certainly MF gives stunningly large negatives. Don’t be put off by the blur in this shot. As I explained I had the camera set to ‘b’ and hand held it, which explains the blur. The bbf is capable of some very crisp shots, I have shown some here and in the words part of the site, as well as quite a few in my flickr stream. I just like including some impressionistic type images in my photoblog from time to time.
I do think there is a bit of a cult factor happening with the percieved desirability of the bbf too, similar to we have seen with the original Diana cameras in the past. Interesting, because this is a new camera, but it seems to have generated this status before even being available! I just know I love shooting with mine – I took out a MF TLR and the BBF yesterday, and I found the BBF a lot more comfortable to use… also I think any new camera (especially new toy cameras, but that’s a personal basis) that interests people in analog photography and photography in general is a good thing.
    Cheers,
    Cameron

Hi Cameron, excellent photos both on your website and Flickr. I just got a BBF and still getting to know it. Was wondering how long you hold it down when on b mode? I know it depends on conditions etc. But I’m perplexed as to why some of my shots didn’t turn out when others in poorer lighting did. I admit it was a bit cloudy but still bright I had it on b mode, held it down a couple of seconds and was using 400 film. Would be great if I could get some pointers. Thanks
