Baba Desi (also known as ‘The Belgrave Wizard’) is a wonderful character, a gentleman who is always happy to pose for a photograph
This is one of my favourite portraits and was one of three photos of mine that I hung in my very first (joint) exhibition, the Light Leaks Exhibition that opened in Northcote, Melbourne in early 2007. I didn’t sell any of the photos, but now I have this cheery fellow beaming at us from our lounge room wall!

most excellent, cameron!
what’s with the skull, though?
Thank you (also most excellent) Angie! The skull-headed walking staff is just one of many Des has in his collection (someone told me he has over 20 staffs) I know I’ve seen him with a few different ones to this, but I was glad Des had this one that day. I thought it sort of looks good all shiny there in the lower right corner of the composition!
nice portrait!
My daughter and I met Baba the Wizard whilstv walking in the forest – “Öh Mum he looks like someone from Lord of the Rings”. We spoke to Baba – an elegant and beautiful man in glorious robes, walking with 2 twisted cane sticks – “What do you do” we asked. “I am a healer, and I charge cup of tea.” Then he stamed ahead of us and disappeared from sight. We looked at each other and said “Did I just dream that?” We will never forget beautiful Baba.
