Wall Of Phones

March 24, 2007

This art installation was in place in a small laneway (Lush lane) off Flinders Lane in Melbourne's CBD in the latter half of 2006. The bank of phones all rang with different ring tones (although the inner urban ambient noise was too loud the day I took this photo for me to hear them)
Taken with the Fujipet and Kodak 400 CN film.

Really cool shot. The sense of scale, at least for me, is out the window. Before I read your caption I was trying to figure out how one would use them, especially if someone was already using a phone on the lower row. One more reason to read the directions before use...great stuff, looking forward to exploring.

they all look push-button to me :-)

this is great, though, cameron! i'd still visit it and ask if i could use the one at the tippy-top!

Thanks Garrison and Angie. Garrison, I had a similar reaction when I first saw a photo of these in one of our Melbourne paper's "Weekend" section, after reading about them I just HAD to check them out for myself. They looked really cool, sitting way up there on the far wall of this little laneway.

there's something about this that feels very sci-fi. must be because on first view they don't really look like phones.
