Dead Tree Dam

December 1, 2007

In country Victoria, on the way from Mirboo North to Morwell along the Strzelecki Hwy, is a large Dam, or Lake, with the trunks of fire ravaged trees standing within.
Recent bushfires burnt the trees and more recent local floods have filled the low land that the trees stood in. It is quite a beautiful sight, and one that pays witness to the contradictions of the Australian climate, aptly summed up in the lines from the poem written in 1904, My Country, by Dorothea Mackeller:
I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of rugged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
Of course, driving past, seeing this, I had to stop and take some photos with my Diana. I have two flanking shots to this one which I will stitch together for a psuedo panorama eventually (not having my tripod or the panorama mask in the camera I simply panned the three shots as levelly as I could) which I will link to when I actually do it...

I love how the composition is horizontal stripes of alternating greens and blues. Australia really IS a country of contradictions.
