White Hat, Red Poncho, Sky and Sand

March 2, 2007

Now this is an interesting one. We took a family holiday to Lakes Entrance on Victoria's east coast and my newly acquired Fujipet camera went on holiday with us (even though it had just had a nice little flight from Tokyo to Melbourne)
Anyway, we had happy days, playing in the sea and having fun getting sand-blasted when the wind really picked up (note: Peel-apart Polaroid photography is a real pain in these conditions)

So I got home & handed my roll of Fujipet holiday memories to the local lab to develop. When I went to pick them up, the manager comes over and says "I'm sorry Mr. Stephen, but one of our more inexperienced staff accidently exposed the film to light at some stage during the development process and the roll is ruined" ARRGH (I'm thinking) ~ OK, what can you do? Ranting and raving doesn't bring back your lost photographic memories, so I asked for the film roll anyway with the thought of using it for practice loading onto a tank reel if I ever get around to developing my own film.

About 8 months later on I purchased a 120 capable scanner, and was looking through my old negatives to scan some in and whilst unrolling this very exposed negative (having forgotten what it was from) looking for some images, I faintly see a few suggestions of something. So what the hell, I loaded them into the negative carrier and started scanning. Lo and behold, with the aid of some digital darkroom image reclamation processes I managed to get about 3 images from the roll! This image is one of them...

(and the moral to this story? I have no idea! Never give up? Honestly, I don't know, it's just an anecdote)

a stunning shot. the strange colours are a perfect match for this crazy hat on a beach.
and yes, you're right: never get up. and never be surprised by a lab's reaction to your toycam adventures.

Thanks Matthew and Louise. I know now never to dismiss any negative, but look at them VERY closely!
The accident that almost totally ruined this particular film is probably what made it special!

Wow is this super cool...and reminds me of of those great add and box cover illustrations you get with your vintage Kodak Brownie series. I say roll with a set of these. Great work. Tell me it's 90 degrees where you live...jeesh, go away snoww. Hello Big C!

Hey, hi Beck, great to see you here! Thanks, this shot does have a wonderful "old-world" feel to it, doesn't it. I only wish I could replicate whatever "accident" happened at the lab so I could get similar results in future rolls! re: "Tell me it's 90 degrees where you live" ~ your wish is my command! It was 33 ° Celsius yesterday which converts to approx 91 ° Fahrenheit! The bright side for you is that as we head through Autumn towards Winter, you are heading through Spring into summer! Cheers Beck!
