Lost Freeway

June 19, 2007

Another from the light-leaked Asiana period. This one was taken on a terrible day where 3 people lost their lives in a nasty accident when some trucks and cars tangled within the Burnley Tunnel, which is part of our freeway system through Melbourne that goes underneath our main river, the Yarra.
Consequently the freeway was closed to traffic for over 24 hours whilst rescue and safety/mop-up operations where carried out. Normally, from this vantage point (from a bridge in the inner-city suburb of South Melbourne) the freeway would be either bustling with cars or resembling a parking lot (not an unusual occurence in peak times) so the desolate feel combined with the smoky light-leak here seemed quite apt, considering the circumstances of the day the image was snapped.

it's a shame such a lovely shot has such a tragic memory linked to it.

Thanks all, yes it was a shame considering the circumstances. The authorities have changed some things to improve safety through the tunnels now.
