The BIG Store

March 27, 2007

Found in Chapel Street, this wonderful example of architecture sits proud but showing the effects of entropy. It must certainly have been a "Big Store" in it's day! It makes me think of all the people who must have passed through it, the people who worked in it's various departments and what they bought and sold...
I found this in the Stonnington News when researching the store:
The Big Store, 303 Chapel Street, was built in 1902. It was also referred to by the name of the Manager, Maclellan, who was a nephew of Gibson, of Foy and Gibson fame. By 1931 the store was incorporated within that company, which was well-known for its vast manufacturing and retailing facilities in Collingwood, on and near Smith Street. The Prahran store closed in 1968. Some of the old signage ~ protected now by heritage regulations - still remains on the building. A second store, almost as large as the main store, once stood in the carpark to the west, beyond Cato Street, linked by cross-over walkways.

Taken on a hot day with the Diana F and Fuji NPC 160.

i love it! was it actually called "the big store" in it's day? i bet they played trumpets outside so you knew what greatness you were entering into. or, maybe not :-) nicely done, as always, with the crappy diana ;-)

Thanks Angie, I felt compelled to look into it's history a bit after uploading this shot, I have updated my description above. Perhaps on opening day they played trumpets? If they didn't, then they certainly should have!

Great shot but the history really adds to it. Nice one Cameron. Phil

Thanks Phil, I love old buildings like this and love to picture them in their heydays. I'm glad there are heritage listings to help save some of these places, they just don't make architecture like this anymore...
