If I seem a bit distracted this month, in no small part it is due to this gentleman. Let me explain, this is Jeff Moorfoot, one of the primary driving forces behind the Ballarat International Foto Biennale. Jeff is the festival director and with the help of the committee, volunteers and participating artists from Australia and overseas has put together the 3rd Foto Biennale held in country Victoria, the first two being held in Daylesford in 2005 and 2007. I’ve been looking forward to this years event for oh, 2 years now, ever since the last one! The Ballarat International Foto Biennale is about to kick off (tonight in fact) and anyone who is even vaguely interested in Photography would find more than enough to entertain and enlighten them in the month of September in the beautiful country Victorian town of Ballarat and it’s surroundings. Comprising 20 Core exhibitions, 60 Fringe shows, workshops, seminars, portfolio reviews, affiliate events, artist floor talks, camera market, special events…and much more it should be a fantastic start to Spring!
This Polaroid was taken outside the Daylesford Town Hall during the 2007 Biennale.

This talented young fellow is one of the Melbourne Flickrites and I caught up with him early in April, along with many other photogs at one of our monthly meets. Most of us take a camera or two and this meet was no exception, I myself took a Polaroid 600SE, EE100 and the little Superheadz Demekin 110 camera.
I was snapping portraits with my Polaroid folder, the EE100 and Ahmad wanted me to take one of him. I asked him what look he wanted and he replied “Gangsta!” He’s a funny guy. He borrowed a cigarette from Barb (another Flickrite), although I don’t think he smokes, but it was for ‘the look’ and struck a pose. We were both quite happy with the result. He signed it (verso):

“To Cam
I like!
Ahmad S”

When I posted it on flickr he left a comment:
“Im sending this photo to my auntie… as soon as her village buy a new donkey, she’ll go up the mountain and go searchin for a new bride for me…this time ive asked her for a petite women who doesnt eat a lot (economic crisis)”
- as I said before, he IS a funny guy.
(which reminds me, I must get a copy to him)

Camera: Polaroid EE100
Film: Polaroid Packfilm “Choco” expired 07/08 – note: this choco film is meant to be sepia, but some people have commented that it has a distincly salmony pink tint.

A talented young artist I know named Hazel Dooney held an exhibition earlier this year. The exhibition was (predominantly) of her photography with a couple of graphic works as well, the subject matter of these images being intimate in nature. The title of the exhibition was PORNO and the gallery staff all sported a T-Shirt with the name of the exhibition on one side and a black and white portrait of a close cropped (hair-wise) Hazel on the other. One of the lovely young gallery staff posed for my plastic camera to produce this portrait, which I am rather fond of.
I came to know Hazel through Polanoid, a web site of Polaroid photography enthusiasts and have followed her career and art with interest since then. She is a lovely person, very down to earth and deserves all the recognition due to her. Needless to say, I bought a T-Shirt!
